[TH 8.19.10] Open Channel 3: Chicago’s Electronic Open Mic

August 15, 2010

Chicago Electronic Open Mic: Open Channel 3Sort of like it’s analog cousin, Open Channel is a non-curated musician’s showcase in a supportive, relaxed environment, except it showcases electronic music, either through DJing or Live PAs. You will get 20 minutes to show off what you do musically, and then listen to other people doing the same thing.

There are 12 slots open. The first 12 people who RSVP and pay will be guaranteed a slot. Playing order will be determined on the date of the performance.

You are also absolutely welcome to bring friends, or just come as a spectator!

There is a suggested donation of $5.

Live visuals & Digital Art Showcase by the members of The Chicago Digital Art & Multimedia Group.

CONFIRMED:
Metrofunk
Quantazelle

TECH STUFF:

* You will be plugging in to an open channel on the mixer with one RCA cable from your gear. We will have 2 people set up on the table and then use the mixer to fade between people when they are ready to go, without dead air. Please try to stick to the 20 minute limit so everyone gets a chance to play.

* There are no monitors, but the room is not huge and the space is carpeted.

* Please note that there is not a lot of room at the front of house, so try to keep your gear footprint to the smallest you can manage (ie: there is no room to set up a full drum kit, so don’t bring it). The ideal setup would be a laptop plus one or two pieces of outboard gear / MIDI controllers.

* You will be plugging into a Beringer mixer so you will need to have L/R 1/4″ mono plugs out

Scroll to MULTIKULTI on the call box to get buzzed in and go up to the 4th floor. The space is an art + media collective and gallery. BYOB.

Text / call me personally at (312) 869-4647.

Multikulti
1000 N. Milwaukee Ave, 4th Fl
Chicago IL 60647
7pm-11:30pm

Please say OPEN CHANNEL at the buzzer or door so you can be directed to the right room. See you soon!

Audio Emissions, Not Auto Emissions
Because I-GO cars have replaced 2,000 private cars and helped our members drive less, there is less pollution and greenhouse gas emitted in Chicago. We have eliminated 7,823 metric tons of CO2 since 2004, the equivalent of not driving 22 million miles!To continue our dedication to sustainable living, I-GO will make this event completely carbon neutral. We are working to mitigate the environmental impact of our concert by reducing carbon emissions at the event and acquiring carbon offsets. Carbon offsets raise awareness of climate change and neutralize the carbon footprint not addressed through planned emissions reductions, emissions-free electricity, or other conservation mechanisms. Holding a Neutral Event is another step towards taking responsibility for climate change and making a difference.

[Ramp Chicago] Machinedrum, Justin McGrath + Emulsion and Liz Revision

March 31, 2007

Machinedrum will school you in partying like you’re in a Brooklyn art loft

[I will be DJing at this. Check out my blog for past setlists and mixes.]

“Which is better, New York or Chicago?” This innocent little question explodes a heated debate between fans of either city. Chicago has less-expensive housing, but New York has a superior public transit system. New York has a phenomenal restaurant scene, but Chicago smells better in the summer. Chicago has Ramp Chicago for quality electronic music nights and New York has Machinedrum’s Cassette fêtes—all-night art / film/ dance parties featuring a who’s-who of contemporary electronic music and indie hip-hop. When Machinedrum takes over the PA at Sonotheque, you’ll get to experience a taste of Brooklyn in the swanky sonic environment of Sonotheque here in Chicago–and you just might just feel the urge to take your shirt off.

It’s easy to see why Travis Stewart’s Machinedrum project has been compared to artists like Prefuse 73, Autechre, and Funkstorung. Take Autechre’s algorithmic glitch, combine it with Prefuse 73’s micro-sampled hip-hoppery, toss in Funkstorung’s genre-crossing prolific remix power, then add the melodic sensibility of Plaid and you can start to imagine his sound. As one of the first artists on the much-lauded (but now defunct) stateside IDM label Merck Records, he sold out albums, raised the label’s popular consciousness, and garnered critical acclaim. Look for two upcoming releases on the Normrex label this year.

And he knows what it takes to make a party go off. Along with two-time DMC World Champion DJ IE.merg he released a ground-breaking battle record for turntablists. Taking his music to the next level, Travis also organizes monthly Brooklyn-based dance parties featuring art openings, live painting, and film screenings under the Cassette banner. Past performers include Jimmy Edgar, Praveen, Telefon Tel Aviv and more.

Make sure you get to Sonotheque early enough to catch local talent Justin McGrath—a one-time producer of dense, emotional IDM who’s switched lanes and now cranks out noisy, analog synth-based dance tracks while still maintaining his characteristic sweeping melodic lines and dense orchestration. Don’t think it can be done? Justin will prove you wrong. And Machinedrum will keep the party going, bringing the sounds of a Brooklyn art loft to one of the best-sounding clubs in Chicago.
Ramp Chicago Flyer Image

* Tuesday, May 8th at Sonotheque
* 1444 W. Chicago Ave.
* $5
* 21+
* 9pm to 2am

Glitch-hop / IDM sensation Machinedrum stops in from Brooklyn to share his sound with Chicago at Sonotheque. Local musician Justin McGrath opens with gritty electro party beats and residents Emulsion and Liz Revision DJ ambient, glitchy techno, electro, and IDM.
